The way it works is you go out and file a placer claim, which is a 20 acre parcel and you can have up to 3 of them. This is done on federal land. You pay a filing fee to the county for the claim and then you have to do your yearly accessment work to keep up the claim. Normaly moving about 6 yards of material would be sufficient to prove accessment work for the year. When you have a claim you can live on the property and you can cut timber as long as it is for your mining claim improvements. You can use the land for your personal use and any gold you take off of it is yours to keep. Neat huh....
There is quite a bit of ground in Oregon that is available and I'm sure there is in Idaho and Calif. also. You just have to check with the county courthouse to see if that land is taken. I know lots of people out in Oregon that has claims and even gets them and sells them for money.
