The new regulation, the Mercury and Air Toxic Standard (MATS), obligates U.S. utility compliance by a deadline of April 2015. Specifically, it requires all U.S.-based coal and oil-fired electric power plants generating 25 mega-watts and higher to reduce their mercury emissions by approximately 90%.
Very few units in the U.S. today consistently limit their mercury emissions at or below the newly required rates. The MATS implementation is therefore exhibiting a strongly felt nationwide impact.
