Were talking different playing fields. The post about VC's is for waiting for darkside plays to have enough retail interest to start a manipulated run for profits. The OTC game! You don't see darkside games often with OTC stocks in the $1 to $5 range.
If your asking about big board stocks, I have a rule of thumb that one should not buy more then 10% of the average daily volume.
Buying large amounts seem to go thru fine. But it's harder to sell large amounts in one lump. Unless your offering them below the bid. And this gets into the area of multiple closing fees and/or price running past you, in a retrace.
So if you plan to trade $5k you need to divide that by the stock price, then require volumes which keep your order below 10%.
EX: trading $5,000 in a $5.00 stock = 1,000 shares. You want at least 10k average daily volume.
