TRIBECA SLATES FAMILY FARE
'Lizzie,' 'Pokemon' to screen; Prada fashions film events
4/21/03

By DAVID ROONEY

The second Tribeca Film Festival has unveiled the lineup for its Family Festival sidebar and announced a pact with Italian fashion house Prada to host "Programs at Prada," a series of screenings and filmmaker conversations, some of which will take place in the high-end SoHo store.

In addition to the New York event, Fondazione Prada, the company's contemporary arts, ideas and culture division, will present highlights from the Tribeca program in Milan this summer, boosting international awareness of the fest.

Panel discussions presented by Prada include two "Directors on Directing: Theater and Film" sessions, one with Neil LaBute and another with Julie Taymor; and "Actors on Acting: Theater and Film," moderated by Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart and featuring Helen Hunt, Edie Falco and Paul Rudd.

Screenings scheduled to take place in the Prada store redesigned by architect Rem Koolhaas include... Dana Brown's surf movie "Step Into Liquid," Damon Dash's insider hip-hop comedy "Death of a Dynasty" and Christopher Herrmann's homage to dance legend Martha Graham, "Ghostlight."

"Screening these films in Prada's space creates an entirely new and intimate experience for festivalgoers," said Tribeca fest co-founder Jane Rosenthal.

Running over two weekends during the main event, Tribeca's Family Festival unspools May 3-4 and May 10-11. Kicking off the event will be Disney's "The Lizzie McGuire Movie," day and date with its May 2 release, with star Hilary Duff attending.

Also screening is Miramax's Hong Kong comedy "Shaolin Soccer," about martial arts masters on the soccer field; plus the fifth installment in the Japanese animated kids franchise, "Pokemon Heroes," also from Miramax.

Other titles in the section include "Touching Wild Horses" with Jane Seymour; "Where the Red Fern Grows" with rocker Dave Matthews; "An Angel For May" with Tom Wilkinson; and Salma Hayek's directing debut "The Maldonado Miracle."

The Family Festival also will feature workshops and interactive panel discussions for children and parents, and will wrap with a street fair. The overall Tribeca fest runs May 3-11.
