Worked in Libya in the oil fields back early 80's...the greatest hazard for workers traveling across the desert was getting lost!! The main trails were marked with orange oil drums evey mile or so, but had a habit of being covered by sand dunes. At least two or three people died every year...don't know if they are (or can) use GPS there, but it would be a Godsend! I spent some scary hours finding my way at times. I asked the company about airline-type radio beacons as for downed aircraft...reply was too expensive plus risk of accidental activation would probably prohibit permission for ground use by individuals...

I think GPS for hunters, skiers, hikers, etc. will become a standard in the near future...
