When you hear people refer to having free shares or "riding on free shares" means that that they already have profited on there original investment and pulled that out and the extra shares or surplus of shares they have left over are consider free shares.. So if the stock goes up 100% it's great but if it drops 100% he's not losing his money per say ( his original investment )
Example: I invest $1000 in GLER @ .01 that's 100k shares, the stock goes to .02 and I sell 50k shares to get my original investment back so the left over 50k shares I still have are consider "free shares " in trading lingo
