Her lying about the bus driver was the whole point in the movie, I thought. She had seen the transformation of the town as basic people who looked after each other to want to be millionaire litigation greedy backbiting assholes.

She derailed the lawsuit to give the childrens' death some dignity. And when she went to say goodnight to the children in the final scene, which I think was a quasi spritual dream sequence, it was like you can sleep in peace.

She was wearing something different than the baby sitting scene that opened the movie. Maybe I am thinking too much.
