Syneron Medical Ltd. (Nasdaq:ELOS) founder and chairman Dr. Shimon Eckhouse is Israel’s entrepreneur of the year. He will compete for Ernst & Young’s world’s entrepreneur of the year competition against candidates from 35 countries at a competition to be held in Monte Carlo in May.
Eckhouse was chosen last night in the Ernst & Young and “Globes’” fourth entrepreneur of the year competition, held at the Hilton Hotel in Tel Aviv. 40 entrepreneurs reached the competition’s final stage out of the more than 200 who registered to compete.

A judges panel headed by Kost, Forer, Gabbay and Kasierer - Ernst and Young (Israel) chairman Yitzchak Forer picked winners in six categories:

Eckhouse was chosen entrepreneur of the year in technology.
Autoluxe Tires (Israel) Ltd. CEO Yosef Motlluoglo was chosen entrepreneur of the year in consumer products.
Second Opinion (Israel) managing director Eldad Halevy was chosen entrepreneur of the year in services.
Candyland Store Chain Ltd. owners Oren and Eylon Sheva were chosen entrepreneurs of the year in retail.
Diagnostics entrepreneurs Oren Drori, Prof. Shmuel Dekel and Ram Nethaniel were chosen as start-up entrepreneurs of the year.
Gvanim Association for Education and Community Involvement director Nitai Shreiber was chosen social entrepreneur of the year.
The entrepreneurs were chosen on the basis of leadership, financial acumen, management ability, strategic thinking, organizational culture, innovation, ability to deal with crisis, and global influence.

The judges panel comprised of businesspeople, industrialists and academics, including GlenRock Israel CEO Leon Recanati, First Israel Mezzanine Investors Fund (FIMI) general manager Ishai Davidi, Israel Discount Bank (TASE: DSCT) CEO Giora Ofer, and Super-Sol Ltd. (TASE:SAE; OTCBB:SSLTF) chairman Avraham Biger.

Founded 20 years ago, Ernst & Young holds an annual entrepreneur of the year competition, which has been shown to be a tool for spotting companies with global growth potential. The competition is considered the Oscars of the business world. 50 of the Nasdaq 100 companies have won the competition in the past.
