I have placed buy and sell orders for grey stocks like this for - say - 3900 shares but the tape printed 39 shares.

There is a reason why 100 shares is considered a "lot" and that options come in 100 shares per contract. Not too long ago you could only buy even blocks of 100 shares and the systems tracked the number of 100 share lots. Later the ability to buy "odd lots" (less than 100) instead of "round lots" was added and systems reported in shares instead of lots.

Sometimes grey sheets still drop the trailing "00".
