Isnt it just as reasonable to assume that guys who consistently trash NNVC and post speculative research about competitive technologies are simply looking to short folks out of their positions?

No, it isn't reasonable although that is the attitude of naive retail investors everywhere -- "Nobody says anything bad about my stock unless they're trying to short me out of my position."

In fact, before NNVC was listed on AMEX, it was near impossible for anybody but MMs to short the stock. Try to short an OTC stock with your broker. He won't let you do it.
