realistically why would you want one in your home?

I understand the corollary with desk top printers but I used to take photos and write things and needed to have them reproduced, and now printers are cheap enough to have one or two in the house.

what objects are you going to print and how often?
What price does the plastic or other material you will use have to be to make it worth printing combs or cozzi's? Only thing i have replaced recently is a toilet flap - that could be printed on a 3D printer but it cost less than $10 to buy.

I do see an opportunity for service locations like UPS has already started allowing you to use 3D software at home and print locally but not actually in the home.

The real markets for 3D technology is in volume manufacturing if and when they can get the speed and reliability upto par with existing systems.
