True, there are patents pending. But it could take months for them to be granted. (I think within about 1 year there should be an answer.)

I'm in no position to judge Dr Son's competencies, however, the video of a working prototype back from Oct 2012

seems odd. No ammeter nor voltmeter connected. Could be any cell. I would think that having two cells beside each other would clear a potion of my doubts.
