Just watching the action-

Might be a real short taking their chances, but it could be a long (or a few longs) with a large position playing the stock.

Lets say someone has 3M shares they've been holding from under .01... it's nothing for them to short the stock and flash an ask of 100k or 250k shares to shake out the penny flippers and hand wringers. They might lose a few shares when people hit the ask, but so what? They'll be making money anyway if they decide to use their existing shares to cover.

By doing this someone can push the stock down and add more shares long than they ever sold short.

Heck, they don't even have to short it- just flash a big ask and shake the tree.

So, it could be that going on, or it's a true short.

Market makers can also play all kinds of games with penny stocks for their own profit...and they almost never lose when they do it.

My apologies if you already know all of this seltz- but I'm guessing there might be a few here who are less experienced/still learning.
