I have two accounts one with Ameritrade and one with E-trade. There is no extra fee to place a pre or after market trade with Ameritrade but there is with E-trade. The commission for them is 35 dollars. As for the benefit for these type of trades it depends if the bid or asks look attractive to you. Trading is usually thin so you have to make sure you like the price and there is enough shares available to buy or sell to you if you want to make the trade. Should you do it? Well let's take tonights bid and ask. Currently there is 1000 shares at 2.51 bid but 27 thousand shares bid at 2.50. If you think the stock may go down tomorrow at the opening the aftermarket gives you and oppportunity to sell at 2.50. On the ask side there is 38k shares for sale at 2.53. If you think the stock will open higher tomorrow it gives you a chance to buy some shares from an anxious seller. If you have no conviction either way then there is no point to looking at the aftermarket trading other than for entertainment purposes. Better to just shut off your computer and spend time with your family
