Most companies would consider the distinction completely irrelevant. They watch closely all companies with a realistic potential to produce competitive products in the future even if they are not at the time.

In high tech, the name of the game is NEVER get caught by surprise (a new competitor from "out of the blue") (People get terminated for not seeing it coming!)
