James C. McCandless
Died: Tuesday, June 18, 2013
Age: 70
James C. McCandless, 70, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013, after a brief, but courageous, battle with cancer.

He was born June 6, 1943, in Detroit, to James W. and Grace (nee Leadbetter) McCandless, who predeceased him. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen (nee Ibe) for 25 years; loving father of Maria Lyons (Kevin) and Kelly Harris (Lyndon); dear brother of Marilyn Gillis, Virginia Joliet, William McCandless and John McCandless and proud grandfather of Jackson and Mallory Lyons.

In 2005, Mr. McCandless founded Alternative Fuel Technologies, a company involved in the design and development of fuel systems for dimethyl ether, a new alternative fuel. Here he served as chief executive officer, president and chief engineer.

Over the course of his career, he became known worldwide for his expertise in all facets of the engine business, including design, development, analysis, manufacturing and marketing. He held 12 patents involving engines, fuel injection equipment and engine test methodologies.

His previous career roles included: president and CEO, AVL Powertrain Technologies Inc.; vice president-engineering, Navistar International Corp. engine division, where he developed the Ford Powerstroke Diesel and CAT HEUI injector; and director-engineering, Kohler Company. He also held numerous roles at International Harvester, from test engineer to division chief engineer-Engines. Also a talented writer and orator, Mr. McCandless made hundreds of presentations and received the Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award.

In 1966 to 1967, he served honorably in the U.S. Naval Reserve—Swift Boat Combat Service in Vietnam and received various combat ribbons.

Mr. McCandless enjoyed relaxing beach vacations, spending time with his family and traveling the Great Lakes on his boat, “Patent Pending.” His work was as much a hobby as it was a livelihood. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by his many relatives, friends, business associates and his devoted dog, Hannah.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of James C. McCandless and sent to the Beaumont Hospice Chapel Fund, 468 Cadieux Road, Grosse Pointe, MI 48230.
