Some thoughts on ViiV:

Is Intel's New Viiv Platform a Good or Bad Thing for the Industry and Consumers?

Mostly, I'm trying to figure out if Viiv is a good thing or bad thing for consumers. My main concern is if Intel's Viiv platform is going to be the only PC platform in coordination with Microsoft Windows Vista, and possibly Apple OS X in the near future, that allows Viiv branded devices to share/stream content securely to other PC and CE devices (supposedly TiVo will be adding Viiv support this year), where does this leave the other chip makers like AMD and VIA in the Digital Home market? So, the big question is, why does Intel get to hold all the keys to this new technology?

Previously, in a Q&A with Intel's Louis Burns and Kevin Corbett, the company made reference that the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), which Intel is member of, was working on a way to integrate support for DRM streaming media technologies in version 2.0 of their interoperability framework via DTCP-IP. Note that the members of the DLNA "share a vision of a wired and wireless interoperable network of Personal Computers (PC), Consumer Electronics (CE) and mobile devices in the home enabling a seamless environment for sharing and growing new digital media and content services." So what gives? Did Intel hijack the technology they helped develop in coordination with the DTLA (Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator) for monetary gain? In my opinion, it appears so.
