The end user search interface is not what I was referring to.
I will give it to you in simple terms,
Assuming MMRFs product had the ability to be a one stop shop for patients from all over the country. And assume that they all get aggregated into a single database.
None assume that there are 126 David Smiths born on August 7, 1972,
in order to have a Master Patient Index you need to be able to tell the difference between them, based on their location, their address, their SSN, also allowing for data entry errors in all of the above, then score the match to the correct David Smith when data comes in so it goes into the right record.
Thats the algo I was referring to that they don't currently have.
