I think you have been watching Silent Hill to much if you consider underground coal fires as more of a threat to nature that completely leveling that same area. hmmm let's see, the Coal Burns releasing its standard toxins, causes some forest/brush fires, and lays dormant for years, sure that sounds bad, but wildfires are a natural part of how the planet renews/recycles. Where as, with the mining, the entire area is completely leveled, mass amounts of mines tailings clog stream contaminate untold amounts of water, and all that is left is a giant crater, oh yeah, and the coal is burned anyways. Perhaps the emissions are cleaner than a free burning coal deposit, but orders of magnitude more are burned by us when we mine it. We sure are Lucky this mine saved us from those awful wild fires that occasionally happen......

Now don't get me wrong, I have no delusions of being able to be coal free currently, but I do believe it should be phased out, and replaced by advanced solar technologies with battery and hydrogen storage, for non-peak generation hours. Of course the research the technology, and build out the massive infrastructure will take decades, so there is no reason to hinder the progress of clean tech in favor of ramping up coal production, which is a guaranteed dead end street.

don't get me started on environmental policies, as most of them are just nonsense written by politicians and lawyers who have no idea what they are doing. Often they boil down to business deals.

On to corn, I personally think it is retarded to use corn as a fuel, it has horrible yields as compared to other crops. I only am invested in isobutanol since the corn laws are already in place and there isn't a damn thing I can do about it, but make a little money on the side lines. As for reserves, we recently had some of the worst drought on record, which ravished corn crops nationwide. However corn prices are now close to half what they were last year indicating that reserve are on the rise. I am sure the RFS has a major impact on crop availability/price, but I don't consider it the sole responsibility for people starving, but I have not the time, nor is this the place to get into that.

Correct me if I am wrong, but did you just defend Oil spills as a good thing? I know that oil spill occur in nature, and yes there are select "nutrients" in oil that could be beneficial.

I don't consider these to be things that I want in my food supply yes I know algae change much of the chemistry during cultivation, but there are toxins that are definitely not good.

This sure looks like the oil spill helped out not to mention the countless other birds and marine life that die as a result of oil spills. You think a nice shrimp and lobster harvest, to feed a country of obese people makes up for it? or how about the chaos that took place before when fisherman were ravished by the spill? or how about BP doing everything in there power to stop having to pay for the damage they caused? they sound like swell guys who really care about the people and the environment.

Your feelings on clean water causing global warming is mute, until you can provide one shred of data that supports it. most of the time, based on your commentary, you seem like a knowledgable guy, but some of your views on cause and effect and how to solves the global problems are just damn loony. I really don't understand at times, how you draw some of your conclusions. You seem like an expert, but with a very narrow scope on how many factors play into how things turn out.

If you honestly believe Fossil Fuels are our saving grace, than you have put a time stamp of about 100-200 years (Maybe) on global pandemonium and near human extinction. The sun is basically the ONLY dependable energy source going forward into the future (I am including tech based on that i.e. fusion etc) Perhaps the planet core as well, but the idea of humans meddling with the planet core scares me.
