Well, to be fair there are Massive government subsidies for corn. it is produced by Multi Billion dollar companies, and has much more time to scale up. take away corn subsidies and you will see ethanol companies drop like flies. Also let us not forget the 10% blend ceiling that ethenol has. fuel companies are in a bind because of regulations for them to add blend more ethenol, but they can't because it would destroy most car engines and infrastructure.

Because I know corn isnt going anywhere for the time being, and knowing the limits of ethenol, it is also why I invested in GEVO. If they can nail down their fermentation process, their Isobutanol could tackle many problems. However I dont see corn as a very good solution long term, which is why i look into algae and other such things, that if figured out how to produce/harvest economically, could actually work well as a transitional fuel.

Coal is a limited resource, and account for massive damage to the environment, and I don't just mean through CO2. Mine tailing, mountain top removal, stream beds being completely clogged up. it is a huge mess. Their is NO SUCH THING AS CLEAN COAL so please don't speak of it as some saving grace.
it will also run out some day. the only way we can go forward into the future is through the use of our sun to produce our energy, or possibly advanced fusion one day. I firmly believe some day most energy will be from solar, and most liquid/gas fuel will be from hydrogen. those are unlimited resources as far as humans are concerned.
