Isn't it likely that some of the rise in short interest has to do with the mechanics of how the convertible debt, that was swapped for shares, actually got sold?
Since it takes a few days to convert the debt to shares and then sell... the faster route, to lock in the gain, would have been to short sell the stock and then use the common shares obtained from the debt to cover the short.
