RE: Leo the "courier". When I was a senior in college, (this was during the late 1960's) one of my classmates had his schedule set up with no classes on Thursday afternoons and Fridays. It turned out that his father was a bond dealer on Wall Street and he had a courier job once a week, flying a locked briefcase full of "Bearer Bonds" between New York and London. The briefcase was actually handcuffed to his wrist and he did not have the keys for either the cuff or the briefcase. While such bonds are illegal now, back in those days it was a standard practice to transport those bonds in that manner.
As I recall, the bonds were placed in the briefcase at the New York customhouse, and then the case was sealed by customs with special stamps which got ripped when the briefcase was opened. This allowed him to pass thru customs in London with no examination of the briefcase. Worked conversly on the return trip using London customs stamps. Now the equivalent is accomplished over the internet.
