(edit) Keep in mind that past and current technology is helping advance future technology at a fast pace than any time in history... and every year we advance faster and faster...

If i wanted to have a prototype part made only a couple years ago, i had to outsource to a machine shop, have the tooling made, then produce the part, inspect for defects, have it shipped to me, etc. This can take weeks/months... Today, i can hit enter on the keyboard and a 3D printer makes the prototype on my desk within HOURS... this single tech helps us make other things so much faster and its just the tip of the iceberg...

Then theres robotics, 3D metrology, new advanced super materials like Graphene/Carbon Nanotubes/etc which will change our lives faster than most can imagine. From corrosion resistance and indestructible devices, armor, engines, etc, to mass energy storage and atomic construction...Watch this...

We are entering the carbon age, where we will start building things at the ATOM level using 2D crystals and other isotopes of carbon... Check out the Higgs Boson discovery if you haven't already. All of these discoveries tie together and will advance man by GIANT leaps in the coming years

What you think will take 15 years, might only take a few years now. Scientists have technology available to them that saves months/years to make discoveries, compared to only a few years back. ONVOs tissue samples should dramatically change drug discovery times and efficacy by itself... Heck, it wont be long until people are living well into the hundreds, leading a lifestyle like someone half their age.

In 10-15 years, space tourism will be affordable for most of us. It would be like paying for an expensive European Trip... With multiple companies jumping into the sector, it will drive prices down while advancing tech even faster... Right now ticket price are about $200-250,000... http://www.virgingalactic.com/

With the Russians currently building the first "space hotel", the space race is heating up again, but this time its not just governments running the show, which is a good thing. Many new startup companies with billionaire backers are entering the sector... http://www.reuters.com/video/2011/08/23/russia-plans-orbiting-hotel-in-space?videoId=218619934

I could go on and on about this stuff, i plan to make a lot of money on next gen tech in the coming years. I started investing in 3D printing almost 2 years ago, before the masses came pouring in and ran these stocks up by hundreds of percent... and i plan to do the same with many other rapidly advancing tech sectors...

The worse thing we can do as investors is underestimate how fast we are advancing and where technology is heading... just ask the shorts on DDD, SSYS and XONE. lol The losses have been massive

PS: hmmm, what will Space Mining do to commodity prices? Thats what i want to know! lol... http://www.planetaryresources.com/

Corporations that might not be interested in exploring space for the adventure and science could be interested in the treasures that a space mining operation could send back to Earth. One NASA report estimates that the mineral wealth of the asteroids in the asteroid belt might exceed $100 billion for each of the six billion people on Earth. John S. Lewis, author of the space mining book Mining the Sky, has said that an asteroid with a diameter of one kilometer would have a mass of about two billion tons. There are perhaps one million asteroids of this size in the solar system. One of these asteroids, according to Lewis, would contain 30 million tons of nickel, 1.5 million tons of metal cobalt and 7,500 tons of platinum. The platinum alone would have a value of more than $150 billion!
