I agree, but... The Government probably smells a cash cow here. Why not take the GSE and turn it into a Government Owned Enterprise. I'm long(ish) on FNMA but there's a reason they want to wind it down. If they are going to backstop these entities with hundreds of billions anyhow, then think of all the profits the Government could earn taking this business away from the private sector.

The only problem with this potential angle is that the government completely sucks at anything they try. If they take it out of the private sector it will just go bankrupt like everything else they run.

I know that, you know that... but in their fog-brained world, I doubt they see it that way.
