New Orleans -- Jack Nicklaus, considered by many to be the greatest golfer to ever grace the greens, will be playing in the 2001 Compaq Classic of New Orleans. The event takes place April 30-May 6 at the Nicklaus-designed English Turn Golf & Country Club.
Nicklaus, winner of 70 PGA TOUR events, including a record-setting 18 majors, and 14 international events, will battle some of today's finest players at this year's event. Nicklaus holds the records for most major victories (18), most runner-up finishes in the majors (19), is one of only five players to ever win the Grand Slam title, has been leading money winner eight different years, was the first PGA TOUR player to earn $2 million, $3 million, $4 million and $5 million for his career, and has been named PGA Player of the Year five times.
In his forty years on TOUR, Nicklaus has amazed spectators with his endurance? competing against and defeating numerous golfing legends, including Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Tom Watson. In 1990, Nicklaus joined the SENIOR PGA TOUR, and has won 10 events in his 11-year career on the SENIOR TOUR. In 1998, Nicklaus became the oldest player to place in the top-ten at a PGA TOUR major, finishing tied for sixth at the Masters. Aside from playing, Nicklaus has designed over 60 golf courses throughout the world, including English Turn, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.
The 2001 Compaq Classic of New Orleans will be the 53rd professional golf tournament in New Orleans since 1938.
