Automation and then lack thereof caused that mishap.
They have not figured out whether the computer or man should fly the aircraft. When the automation fails one has to rely on his or her own hands that are rusting as we speak unless you routinely disengage the automation to keep your skills to par or better. On my flight from Frankfurt on Monday the crew manually flew the aircraft less than 2 minutes of the 10 hour flight.
It's a big problem in today's aviation business.
ie. Air France flight laying on the bottom of the Atlantic for a spell....then swept under the rug.
