UMWA says employment 'terms and conditions' for current Patriot miners changed
Patriot Coal

By Jessica Y. Lilly
July 1, 2013 · The United Mine Workers of America said today that, Patriot "made changes to the terms and conditions for active employees, as allowed by the judge."

A federal bankruptcy judge gave a ruling in May that Patriot Coal permission to cut current employee wages and benefits.

That ruling allowed those changes to take effect as soon as today.

In an email, UMWA spokesman said, "The terms (Patriot) implemented include some improvements over the judge's order." It's not clear exactly what improvements were made from the original proposal.

UMWA says retiree health care benefits at current levels are secured through August and no ones' pension will be affected. Negotiations between the two parties continue. Patriot Coal was not immediately available for comment.
