DHS To Host Industry Days On Explosive Trace Detection
By: Mickey McCarter
05/09/2013

Researchers at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced industry days for assessing explosive trace detection (ETD) systems.

The two-day event on advanced trace detection instrumentation and methodologies will occur in Washington, DC, on July 25-26, DHS' Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate said in a notice. By sponsoring the event, the S&T Directorate hopes to explore the latest research in trace explosive detection for aviation, facilities and mass transit security applications.

Ultimately, DHS would like to expand the number of substances detected by ETD systems and to detect them more rapidly.

"DHS S&T is interested in significantly expanding the number of detectable analytes in explosives trace detection systems to include a range of liquid, volatile and semi-volatile organic, salts and mixtures thereof," the S&T Directorate said. "The addition of more analytes to the detection requirements for explosives trace detectors will require substantial technology enhancements that provide higher selectivity and sensitivity as well as sample collection improvements."

The results of research presented during the industry event will inform a new program in high-resolution explosives trace detection, DHS said. Any potential solicitations that follow would likely generate contract awards in 2014. Meanwhile, the S&T Directorate and the Transportation Security Administration will share information on their future plans for ETD system development during the industry days.

Part of the focus of S&T ETD technology initiatives includes development of next-generation ETD desktop systems, development of portable ETDs, data analytics for existing sensors, advanced sampling methodology, and preparation of trace explosives sample generation as vapor or particles. DHS will discuss technology development in these areas but also called for industry presentations on them as well.

The Explosives Division of DHS S&T "will consider technical innovations that demonstrate benefits to trace detection technologies listed above for inclusion in the poster session and a possible presentation opportunity." Posters must fit on a 3-foot by 3-foot poster board.

Companies interested in giving presentations or participating in the poster sessions must submit a half-page abstract to DHS by May 23. The department will inform companies of acceptance by May 30, and final presentations and posters are due by June 27.

The event is open to the public but DHS is limiting each organization to three representatives, one of which should be a senior technical person in research and development or product planning. Registration is open through June 25 for foreign nationals and July 11 for US citizens.
