The blind refuse to see eh? This has been going on for awhile. it picked up steam in the war on drugs prior to cell phone being big in this country so during the early 90's and before the DEA could walk into any baby bell and ask that a city block or multiple city blocks to start to track phone calls from land lines - it was very easy to do with land lines and their switching systems. The government did not need a court order because they could not use this evidence (just like today) in court. Once they became suspicious of someone they would turn this over to the proper authorities to start to build a case.

Today the technology is much more sophisticated and as long as they do not link the name of the person to the number they need squat for approval. They not only can track your number but they can start to track your face. Ever check into a Las Vegas hotel? Walk into a Vegas Casino? Or most any major Casino anywhere?
