It seemed like "luck of the draw", rather than a direct relationship with cold. It was arguably vehicle specific, although I can't prove that, since it happened to an '89 Dodge 2.5L and a, geez what was theat Escort, a 2.4L?
It never happened all the times I was starting engines at -40, -50, and a few times at -60F, but those times were back in the '70s and early 80s, in far more northern climes and with older vehicles.
It might have had to do with temporary pressure buildups due to thick oil blocking parts of the engine. I knew it happened by the smell of the engine once it warmed up to start smoking the oil, now all over the top of the engine.
