ViroPharma Stock Jumps On Buyout Rumors

Shares of ViroPharma (VPHM) spiked 9% and were near 30 in afternoon trading on the stock market Monday, at an eight-month high, on a report that the biotech was attracting "preliminary interest" from several pharmas as a buyout target.
Citing unnamed sources, Reuters reported that ViroPharma wasn't looking for a buyer but several companies were interested in its pipeline of orphan drugs. Orphan drugs treat rare diseases that don't have other treatments, and in order to encourage their development the FDA grants them seven years of market exclusivity after they're first approved.
One such drug by ViroPharma, Cinryze, treats a condition called hereditary angiodema, and its sales rose 44% year-over-year in the most recent quarter.
