14nm Knights Landing to feature on-package memory

http://newsroom.intel.com/community/intel_newsroom/blog/2013/06/17/intel-powers-the-worlds-fastest-supercomputer-reveals-new-and-future-high-performance-computing-technologies

To further boost the performance for HPC workloads, Intel will significantly increase the memory bandwidth for all "Knights Landing" products by introducing integrated on-package memory.

My personal speculation is that they will put in a 4x DDR4 socket, just like Haswell-E.

Having no need for a host CPU makes things easier on programmers and increases power efficiency as well. As a PCIe accelerator the Xeon Phi has already marked a declining trend in GPGPU, but it seems Knights Landing will raise the bar substantially for Nvidia to remain competitive.
