Spokeshave, Re: the claim that it is nothing more than a marketing gimmick is FUD.

Prove it. Where is there any value in an unreliable performance equivalency rating?

Re: AMD has pushed this concept off-center from a valuable comparison tool more towards a marketing gimmick with the Barton 3000+

There are plenty of other examples. Try the new Athlon XP-M line. They are supposed to compete with Centrino, yet they are modeled after Pentium 4. How about the other mobile chips that run at 200MHz or 266MHz FSB, but have the same model rating at the same frequency, regardless? Or those that have the same model rating as the 333MHz desktop chips, even though they run with a slower front side bus? AMD just recently tried to illustrate that a faster front side bus on the desktop deserves a higher rating, but then they apply that higher rating to 266MHz mobile and server chips. AMD also tried to show that Barton deserved a higher rating because it should be compared using an nForce 2 board. Yet, the Barton based server chips use similar ratings on the much slower 760MP chipset.

I could go on, but there's no point. AMD's model numbers aren't good for much more than a high ASP.
