I think it's less that e.Digital made a great mistake as they really didn't have any other choice.
Someone has to want what you have or you have to make something else. When no one wanted what they had they were forced to root around looking for something someone wanted.
There's a few irons in the fire now but the financial rewards are shaky at best.
PS - Anyone reading this post that is inclined to elucidate just how shaky the rewards are can try to resist the urge. It's been discussed a thousand times already. Unless, of course, you have some fresh insight to share. TIA.
