There are those discoveries that are serendipitous. Nanoviricides came as a result of Diwan's dream of creating a self-assembling nano-scale drug courier, where he wanted to deliver anti-HIV drugs directly to the virus, but found the nanoparticles destroyed viruses all by themselves.

Odd you brought up microwave ovens. Nicola Tesla developed microwave theory and technology as it is used today, including to cook food. Not sure what you mean by radioactivity, though. I can't think of a single instance where devices using radioactivity didn't come from applying theories, "dreaming." And, plastics came from labwork expanding on the the chemistry for nylon fiber, a solution to the limited supply of silk. In every case it seems to me that accidental discoveries then required "dreaming" its practical application, including penicillin.
