Fannie Mae, according to their mission statement, exists to provide liquidity, stability, and affordability in the housing market. The company has recently boasted record profits and expects to remain profitable for the foreseeable future. If the rug were to be pulled out from under them, it would greatly harm the US economy and the quality of life of the multitudes of people and institutions that benefit from their services. When the projected repercussions of doing away with Fannie Mae become clear enough to Congress, one should expect to conclude that Fannie Mae is here to stay.
