Article on transdermal delivery. I started googling transdermal delivery and found a really great overview on the history, the process itself and the future. (See below link). In a nutshell transdermmal delivery mean for the most part "the patch" and the technology has not changed in years nor has the limited types of drugs, nicotine, estrogen. Big pharma usually out sources this "technology" patch system which they do not like to do because they do not like to share profits. Also the future of transdermal delivery seems to be to add some sort of electrically charged device (which I believe FUSE mentioned somewhere) which would enhance the absortion rate. Also there was a patch on the market with only a 3% absorption rate. It's an anesthetic called lidocaine

"A large excess of drug is placed in the patches to keep the concentration gradient favorable for absorption. For example, the labeling of the lidocaine patch (Lidoderm®) states that only 3% of the applied dose is absorbed (5). Because the active ingredients act at low dosage and are inexpensive, the cost of wasted excess drug is not economically significant."
