I've spent time as a software developer, some with a company doing something radically new in the database area --- perfectly honest people trying to tell others when they would be done -- it's not as easy as you might think. The time needed to deal with unknown unknowns is hard to estimate.

Then when a date slips you must deal with people calling you incompetent or a lier. That adds to the fun.
