Max Pain is basically a system where the market makers buy or sell stock options on their own account to hedge the totals and equal out the public/institutional purchases and sales of options so that they are about equal in order to make the majority of option buyers lose money (Max Pain, I know, it is reprehensible isn't it?), and in the same game assure that they (the market makers) make the most on their own differences between buy and sell prices.
