Ex-Carbiz CEO moves to health care network

SARASOTA COUNTY - Carl Ritter, the former chief executive of CarBiz Inc., has been named the new CEO of The Cancer Support Community, formerly called The Wellness Community of Southwest Florida.


He replaces Jay Lockaby, who was named to a new position by the cancer support organization's national headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Ritter, who begins his new job on Wednesday, will lead a staff of 24 and hundreds of volunteers.

The local group is scheduled to open a new 11,142-square-foot healing center in mid-October.

The new campus on a five-acre site just east of Interstate 75 in Lakewood Ranch is "designed to be an optimal healing environment, combining healthful materials, art, design and nature in a 'green' facility to support people whose immune systems often have been compromised."

Lockaby, who was the local CEO for nearly eight years, has become senior vice president of affiliate relations and strategic growth for the Cancer Support Community, a network including 50 local affiliates and more than 100 satellite sites.

Carbiz, once a promising roll-up play in the "buy here, pay here" auto industry, announced in February that it had ceased operations, and that all its assets have been turned over to two lenders on the hook for $28 million in debt.

In mid-January, lenders Dealer Services Corp. and Wells Fargo issued default notices to the Manatee County-based Carbiz, which moved to the region in 2004 from Toronto and switched its stock to the U.S. over-the-counter market as well
