Tenchu, 4-way Opteron is acting very close to 1-way Xeon. Check out:
http://www.hotchips.org/archive/hc14/hc14pres_pdf/28_AMD_Hammer_MP_HC_v8.pdf

Average diameter of 4-way Opteron is 1.17 hops. Xeon with northbridge in asynchronous mode (I'm not sure what sync or async modes Xeon is using), is a system with 1 hop. So 4-way Opteron has only 17% overhead over single Xeon. Practically 4 cpu's on a single core. That system will beat all 4-way servers in the world, including Itanium and Power4.

True, 8-way system scales much worse. The best you can have is 1.64 hops. So the penalty for going from 4 to 8 will be huge. Maybe that's explain why 8-way Opterons are not popping up.

If I had to design 32-way Opteron, I would use 8 blocks of 4 cpu each, using at least 5 aHT switches between.
