wbmw, agree except just one point. You say Penetrating the server market is very difficult, and it took Intel years to outsell RISC despite having superior solutions.

See, my favorite SAP score of:
1. fastest quoted Xeon server (there are some faster Itaniums though):
IBM eServer xSeries 440 Model 8687-38X, 16-way SMP, Intel Xeon MP 2.0 GHz, 256 kB L2 cache 1090

2. The fastest 16-way RISC server is:
Fujitsu Siemens Computers PRIMEPOWER 900, 16-way SMP, SPARCTM V, 1.35 GHz, 256 KB L1 cache, 2 MB L2 cache 2200

So, Solaris/SPARC based solution is exatly twice faster, I would say Xeon just doesn't qualify to compete anywhere above entry-level server space. The problem is with poor Xeon scalability, problem addressed by Opteron.

3. hp ProLiant DL740, 8-way SMP, Xeon MP 2.0 GHz, 2 MB L3 cache 715
