A relatively small, heavily-armed, anti-American (not anti-Republican or anti-Democrat) group within a huge mob attacked our embassy. It was probably rather spontaneous—an hour or two of gathering men and munitions—and quickly executed. Nothing immediate could have been done to stop it. The underlying causes are many decades, if not centuries old.
Embassies of all nations have been attacked since the beginning of recorded history. The ancient Egyptians dealt with it, as did the Greeks and the Romans. Every colonial power since the Age of Exploration has had many, many embassies not only attacked, but wiped out. One would be hard-pressed to find any U.S. administration since George Washington’s that has not had at least one embassy or consulate attacked. There were seven embassies attacked during GW Bush’s term.
The current tempest is nothing more than a deliberate, cynical, lie-filled attack on Hillary Clinton in a sleazy attempt to derail her in 2016. Meanwhile, all the real problems of our country lay festering because Republicans don’t really govern, they just hate.
All that is needed to make a happy life is within yourself, in your way of thinking. -Marcus Aurelius
