That is probably the case, but a difficult one to prove :)

One factor in favor of that assumption is malicious intent. Stoll/Varney may have been selfish and unsuited, but malevolence didn't appear to play a role. Of course, there is much we don't know, much they can hide from us, and there was that odd departure of Tran...

On the other hand, consider the duration of the Stoll/Varney reign. 11 years? That is a long time for sh*tty mgmt to remain in charge. Hell, 'W' only went 8! There were some serious lack of controls at the BOD to allow this to perpetuate for so long.

In all fairness, it didn't start going downhill until '04. But that is still 9 years or so. When they didn't get the boost they need from the EM results, the lights should have illuminated. From that point on, the botch job accelerated (as did the MB con job).

In conclusion, if you remove malevolence from the equation, I'm not so sure you have a strong case that there are 'worse managements' out there :)
