if someone was interested, Varney would probably have found them.

If this were the case, though, my suspicions are that Varney soured them on the pursuit, and probably drove them far, far away. Incompetence has a negative impact on people. And with the poison pill? That likely sealed the deal -- or didn't, if you know what I mean.
