All the research done in any lab has to be funded, At universities/medical schools etc it is mostly funded
by the federal government (NIH) through competitive research grants, but also by pharma companies. You stated:

If they want the research to continue they will have to spend the money to support the research,
or do it in-house
. There are no guarantees that can be given about funding. The Brekken lab has its own
grants and research projects that it has been working on for years. They are not going to just drop
everything and pick up Thorpe's work. They will have to apply for grants just like everyone else. If funded,
then hire new postdocs, lab personnel, etc. We are talking about a period of several years before they
could do it. It all depends on the funding cycle of the NIH. BPs could ramp up much faster.
