Chatting to our friends at Ruckus Wireless, it slipped out in conversation that Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 (which only just went on sale in the USA last week (April 2013) has got built in support for something known as HotSpot 2.0 (HS 2.0). Ruckus casually describe HS 2.0 as “‘next big thing’ in the networked world.” GoMo News thinks the company is absolutely right because it has major implications for both major enterprises/organisations. Basically they should be able to sell connectivity on their high-speed WLANs to the MNOs (Mobile Network Operators).

Support for HS 2.o has been added to the S4 by Samsung under its under its new Passpoint initiative (See the picture above).

Apple and other Android devices will follow suit pretty quickly, Ruckus predicts.

Writing in his GoMo News Guest Post here, Rob Mustarde, vp of marketing and product management with Ruckus Wireless says, “I strongly believe that whilst HS 2.0 has been developed and promoted predominately by carriers and equipment suppliers, this new technology looks to have its greatest impact and appeal within the enterprise.”

Much has been written about the benefits of Wi-fi offload for the mobile network operators whilst they simultaneously roll out their 4G networks and try to ensure fast data connexions for their subscribers.

GoMo News thinks that HS 2.0 provides the ideal answer.

Unlike UMA which tried to achieve a similar benefit for voice, HS 2.0 will concentrate on ensuring continuous data connexions.

With both businesses and MNOs benefiting from the results of collaboration, we can’t see how HS 2.0 will miss.
