Handset maker Nokia (NOK) will launch a new Lumia smartphone in London on May 14 , the company said Friday.
When presenting Nokia's first-quarter results last week, Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop said the company would soon introduce a new Lumia device to be marketed by a leading U.S. network operator. The event would mark the beginning of a series of new Lumia product launches, Mr. Elop added.

Sales of Nokia's closely-watched lineup of Lumias, which run Microsoft Corp.'s (MFST) Windows software, rose 27% in the first quarter compared to the prior quarter to 5.6 million units.
However, despite the relatively strong growth in Lumia shipments, Nokia is currently a minnow in the high-end smartphone markets compared to dominant suppliers, Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE) and Apple Inc. (AAPL).

Samsung's smartphone shipments grew 56% to a record 69.4 million units in the January-March quarter, research firm Strategy Analytics said earlier Friday. Apple's shipments grew 7% to 37.4 million units, its slowest-ever year-on-year rate, the researcher said.
