One of the great lessons of history is that although well-informed about pertinent history, people will not learn those lessons.
Instead, they repeat making the same mistakes over and over, claim that things are different THIS time, and go into denial when the inevitable happens. "Trial and error" becomes repeated systemic repetitions.
IN the came of smky, it is not the ceo who is making the bad decisions, rather it is the coterie of "investors" who are loyal and follow the leader of this stock-selling enterprise. It seems that those who are fooled once are susceptible to being fleeced again and again, often by the same sophisticated gamester who may be manipulating the moves to assure HIS fine life style at the expense of the greedy, gullible gamblers who purchase his promises and sizzle by throwing their hard-earned money on the blanket and play for riches. All IMHO.
