I agree with both of you in minor respects but I think you are both looking at situations outside the norm.

MadOnion isn't even a quintessential benchmark for the home user. The percentage of gamers that pay attenition to MadOnion scores is small vs total computer usage. Especially when the users are doing exotic overclocking with something other than air cooling.

Given that caveat air cooled overclocking can be a resonable clue to yields, top end capabilities, etc.

Hyperthreading is nice but it only makes the P4 more like the Pentium Pro. Pentium Pro was good on some apps and bad on others. Pentium II had a better balance and Pentium III was just right. Hyperthreading doesn't do anything to help with the singlethreaded apps that still don't run as fast on a P4 as they do on a PIII.

The real solutions for home users were found in the PIII and Athlon. Will Hammer take that baton in stride, fumble it, or drop it? I don't know but P4 isn't going to get a chance at it until/unless Hammer drops the baton and then only if Pentium M doesn't replace the P4.
